St. Vincent de Paul operates the Dayton area’s only two 24/7 emergency homeless shelters – one for men, and one for women and families with children. We never close or turn anyone away, ensuring that each individual or family approaching us for help receives access to a place to sleep, personal care items, showers, three meals daily, clothing, laundry facilities, mail and messaging services, and access to other programming. We serve an average of nearly 500 guests each night, including 70 children. Households with children are most at risk for housing stability and homelessness. While there is a continued shortage of available affordable housing in our community, the causes of homelessness are more complex than housing. Personal barriers to maintaining housing stability include any one or combination of the following: the effects of generational poverty, lack of education or job skills, severe persistent mental illness, chronic medical conditions, advanced age, substance use disorder, family conflict (including domestic violence and broken relationships), recurrent eviction, etc. We strive to meet the basic needs of our neighbors who come to shelter with dignity, respect, and compassion, walking alongside them with encouragement and support as they navigate difficult circumstances. | |
