| Safe Passage (SP) was created in 1997 and incorporated in 1998 as a non-profit agency providing comprehensive and individualized supportive services including an emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence. Since inception, SP has had two significant periods of expansion. In 2011, Safe Passage was selected to be part of a state-wide pilot project sponsored by the CDC to develop out primary prevention programming, a new concept at the time. Safe Passage has since become a recognized leader for its prevention programming which now includes evidence-based curriculum implementation in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, local colleges, youth programs and throughout the communities in various settings. In 2018, Safe Passage expanded again becoming the only certified rape crisis center in the service region. It became clear that expanding programming to serve victims of sexual violence was necessary as staff increasingly witnessed the effects of sexual trauma with many of the DV clients being served. Unfortunately, as was the case with DV services before the inception of Safe Passage, there were virtually no Sexual Assault services in our six- county region. As a result, SP pursued support and funding to expand the agency into Sexual Assault service provision which led to the creation of Safe Passage’s Safe Place in 2018.
Now, 28 years later, Safe Passage continues to be the only provider of comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault services, filling a critical need, through the provision of individualized and comprehensive supports and services. SP serves victims of domestic and sexual violence (DV/SV) throughout the rural counties of Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, Franklin, Switzerland and Jefferson counties. Safe Passage is a recognized leader in the state for its high-quality supports and services to victims and has maintained good standing with all funding partners. Specifically, SP provides: 24/7/365 emergency safe shelter; food, clothing and other items to meet daily needs; a designated 24/7/365 Crisis Hotline and hospital response; advocacy, case management, education and ongoing support; referrals for individual counseling; transportation assistance; individualized safety planning; legal advocacy and assistance with filing protective orders; individual and group wellness programs; developmental asset-based children’s programming. In addition, Safe Passage provides DV and SV specific program materials throughout the community, DV/SV education, awareness activities and trainings to local social service agencies, law enforcement and the community. In addition, SP provides primary prevention programming that addresses risk and protective factors in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, youth serving agencies and through the communities served. Through all programs, provided free of charge, Safe Passage aims to provide safety, stability and healing to victims of violence and their children, to improve systems of response for victims and to build healthy violence free communities through primary prevention programming. |
