What is the mission of your organization? | MDA is leading the fight to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases that take away physical strength, independence and life. We use our collective strength to help kids and adults live longer and grow stronger by finding research breakthroughs across diseases; caring for individuals from day one; and empowering families with services and support in hometowns across America. |

The freedom to walk, to talk, to run and play. To laugh, to hug, to eat — even breathe. Each day these freedoms are taken away from kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that weaken muscle strength and limit mobility. Together we can change that. Since 1950, we’ve spearheaded efforts to transform the lives of people with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases. We fund groundbreaking research for promising treatments and provide families with the highest quality care from the best doctors in the country. When kids attend MDA Summer Camp, they gain independence as they spend time away from home and, more importantly, time away from their primary caregivers. They learn to accept personal care from someone other than their parents, form lifelong friendships, develop greater self-esteem and confidence, and get the chance to spend time with kids who have similar challenges. Each camp is staffed with dedicated health professionals and trained camp volunteers who meet every child’s medical and physical needs. This team assumes all camper care, including physical and emotional support, giving parents much-needed “time off.” Camp is available to kids who have been diagnosed with a type of neuromuscular disease covered by MDA’s program. |

If you’re 18 or older and available for a multi-day camp, apply to join us as a volunteer counselor or medical staff member. Volunteers work with campers, providing around-the-clock care and attention. Counselors push wheelchairs, meet the daily needs of each child and become a youngster’s friend for a week. Medical staff supervise and maintain the health and well-being of our campers by dispensing medications, delivering first aid and more.
As an MDA volunteer, you’ll serve as the driving force that helps families in hometowns across America. You’ll make experiences like MDA Summer Camp, fundraising events, seminars and many more possible for individuals with muscular dystrophy who are counting on us. MDA Muscle Walk is a life-changing event that strengthens families and communities. In more than 150 hometowns across America, every event includes a 1- to 3.1-mile lap designed for participants of all ages and abilities, including a wheelchair and equipment friendly course. Leading up to the event, participants and teams fundraise to help MDA find research breakthroughs across diseases, care for kids and adults from day one and empower families with services and support to live longer and grow stronger. Muscle Walk is more than a fundraising walk. It’s a powerful experience that forges lifelong connections, celebrates families and the barriers they overcome and turns hope into answers. Learn more and sign up today at walk.mda.org. We also have opportunities for 6-12 grades to volunteer in our office, at our Muscle Walk and at some of our events for service hours if needed. |
