The Harriet Beecher Stowe House is the physical connection between Harriet and her research for writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It is the only building left standing from the Lane Theological Seminary, home to the first abolitionist debates in the US and residence of the Beecher family in the 1830s and 1840s. It was later an African American boarding house and tavern listed in the Green Book in the 1930s. The House then became a museum to highlight the need for “a lighthouse symbolizing good will.”

Sharing the history of the Stowe House and the Beecher-Stowe families continues with our dynamic programming, exhibitions and programs.

Thank you.
