Since 1974, The Christ Child Society of Dayton has been providing vouchers to pay for coats and shoes chosen by the children receiving the items. In 2001, vouchers to help with the cost of school uniforms were added to the program. Each year, in early fall, school principals and social service agencies, through whom we work are contacted to determine the number of vouchers they are requesting. Numbered voucher forms are distributed to the schools and organizations who in turn track the recipients of the vouchers and care is taken that children receive only one set of vouchers each. The families take the vouchers to JC Penney stores and may purchase uniforms, coats and shoes with the vouchers. The vouchers are for a fixed amount and any excess amount spent is the responsibility of the purchaser. The clothing items purchased may not be returned for cash or credit, ensuring that vouchers will be used for their intended purpose, to clothe a needy child.
Since the economic downturn in 2008, our organization has not been able to fulfill all the requests we receive. As such, we have solicited grant monies to help fill this gap of need. Although we are still unable to fill all requests, we make every attempt to obtain funds from any likely source. We anticipate that the need will be greater this year because of the devastation of the tornados in some of the areas served. |
