The Foodbank serves a network of over 100 food pantries, hot meal sites, emergency shelters, and other member agencies by acquiring and distributing food. We are the leading hunger relief program in the greater Miami Valley area.
The Foodbank acts as a central warehouse facility to our network of partner agencies with food assistance programs in the Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties of Ohio. We are the only organization in our tri-county service area of this kind. In fiscal year 2022, we distributed over 15 million pounds of food to 650,843 people. In addition to the daily acquisition and distribution of food to our network of partner agencies, The Foodbank also operates seven outreach programs:– Mobile Farmer’s Markets: Our trucks visit 20 locations monthly to distribute food in areas that do not have a local food pantry, regions with especially high levels of poverty, and low-income senior living facilities.– Commodity Supplemental Food boxes: These boxes of healthy, shelf-stable food are provided to qualifying low-income seniors once a month tailored to meet their nutritional needs.

– Kids Cafe: The Foodbank provides meals to food insecure children at after school programs and other community centers.

– Good-to-Go Backpacks: These weekend meal packages of food are provided to school-aged children who rely on free or reduced-cost lunches throughout the school week, but may otherwise have to go without food over the weekend.

– Drive Thru Food Pantry: We operate an on-site drive thru twice a week, which enables us to provide food to individuals with mobility issues who have difficulty getting out of their vehicles and carrying heavy boxes of food.

– Mass Food Distributions and Special Food Drops: With the help of our partners CareSource and Henny Penny, we operate three mass food distributions each year, one in each of our three counties.

– Food Scripts: In partnership with Dayton Children’s Hospital, The Foodbank provides a box of shelf-stable food items to families tailored to meet the nutritional needs of children who screen positive for food insecurity by Dayton Children’s physicians or community workers.

Common volunteer opportunities at The Foodbank include:
– Foodbank Drive-Thru (Year-round)- The Foodbank operates a drive-thru style food and produce distribution onsite where volunteers help sort produce and distribute food to Foodbank clients. The Foodbank Drive-Thru is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning from 9am-11am.– Mobile Farmer’s Markets (Year-round)- The Foodbank goes out to various host sites across Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties giving out goods and produce to those in need. Volunteers help fill out paperwork and help pass out food. Each mobile pantry lasts about 2 hours and is scheduled Monday-Thursday from 9am-4pm.– Good-to-Go Backpacks (August-May)- Each week, volunteers build packs full of food. These packs are then given to schools and agencies, who in turn, give them to children facing food insecurity. The children receive them on Friday to sustain them through the weekend. This project is available Monday-Thursday by appointment from 9am-4pm in 2-3 hour shifts.– Donation Repack (Year-round)- When we receive food drives, volunteers sort through the boxes and canned goods. Food drives happen all year round, but two times a year (May and end of the year) we receive large donations. This project is available Monday-Thursday by appointment from 9am-4pm in 2-3 hour shifts. Some special projects may be scheduled.

– Urban Garden Volunteering (April-September)– The Foodbank Urban Garden contains over 40 raised beds growing fresh herbs and produce, an ‘Edible Forest’ of apple and pears trees as well as cherry bushes, and an onsite composting facility. Garden volunteers helping with a variety of tasks including planting and harvesting, mulching and weeding flower beds, facility maintenance, and more. Garden volunteering is scheduled in 2-3 hour shifts on Mondays from 1pm-4pm and Wednesdays from 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm.

– Produce Sort (July-November)- When produce is received from grocery stores, it comes in all conditions. Volunteers sort through the produce, separating fruits from vegetables and separating good from bad. There is some lifting of boxes in doing this task. This project is available Monday Thursday by appointment from 9am-4pm in 2-3 hour shifts.
