The opiate epidemic changed our lives forever. In August 2014 we lost our oldest son Robby to a heroin overdose. We had to do something in his memory to serve our community and Brave Choices is that something. We address the immediate needs of those in addiction by providing connections to counseling and treatment for the whole family. My husband and I are kinship care providers for a family member’s seven year old boy through Hamilton County children Services and have legal custody of him because his parents are in active addiction. We have provided many families with clothing, diapers, food, transportation, connections to counseling and treatment, connections to legal assistance, we accompany victims of domestic violence to court, we help victims of human trafficking out of their situation and get them to safe houses, we provide awareness and education of Neo Natal Abstinence syndrome for caregivers of infants born with substances in their system from the mother’s drug use. We have addressed the Health Committee at the Ohio State House to speak in support of HB 14 The Kinship Navigator Program. We are a voice in our community for those who do not have the ability or the resources to stand up and speak for themselves. We are the problem solvers, the support, the one who steps in when no one else is willing to help. | |
