Founded in 1929, Camp Ho Mita Koda is the first and oldest summer camp in the United States for youth with Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is a life-long, chronic condition, and youth must monitor and respond to their blood sugar levels 24/7, which can be very challenging in a traditional camp environment. CHMK is designed to meet the complex wellness needs of a child with Type 1 Diabetes, including a nutrition team that designs & prepares a diabetes-friendly menu, a 24/7 on-site medical team, scheduled glucose checks, and a staff highly trained in diabetes management. By providing additional supports, these youth can safely participate in fun recreation activities, such as rock climbing, swimming, kayaking, a high ropes course, all while developing a support network and learning how to independently manage their diabetes.
CHMK’s array of year-round programming reaches nearly 1,000 adults and youth annually. This includes our Type 1 Diabetes Summer Camps (ages 5-17), Family Camps, Mission Partner Camps, Teen Weekends and Women’s Wellness Weekends. |
