What is the mission of your organization? | |
Our Mission 1) Raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its subtle symptoms to promote early detection. We do this through our 2 major events- our Jeans & Jewels Gala and our Teal Power Walk. We have produced a video to educate young women about ovarian cancer and its symptoms, to know your family cancer history and to be your own healthcare advocate. The video features 3 young women ages 13, 18, and 25 all diagnosed with ovarian cancer. We have distributed the video to over 50 local schools. 2) Support our Survivors through care totes for newly diagnosed women, quarterly Survivor Socials, and our Woman to Woman mentoring program for newly diagnosed women. 3) Raise money to fund research for a cure. We have donated $1,925,000 to the top researchers in the world in the field of ovarian cancer. |

Ovarian cancer affects your mother, your sister, your grandmother, your friend, and maybe you. There is no early detection method for ovarian cancer like a mammogram or PAP smear. The symptoms often send women to primary care or gastro doctors, who treat the symptoms before looking for ovarian cancer. That is why 90% of cases are diagnosed at stage 3 or 4, therefore the survival rate is only 46%. That is one of the worst of ALL cancers. Also many women dismiss the symptoms since they do not know what they are, and usually wait until it has spread to finally see a doctor. There has not been much research for this disease, so not much progress has been made in the last 25 years. We definitely need more research to find a cure and an early detection method. |
